History:
According to the opinion of historians
and geographers, Castellammare is the ancient Emporium of Segesta,
or rather it was its port where the shipping business of the city
of the Elimi took place.
The Carthaginesi fortified the whole of the Gulf during the fight with Selinunte. After the Punic wars and the end of the Carthaginian power, the area increased its value with the Romans who made it impregnable with the building of a fort on the sea.
The Arabs whose rule began in the IX century, destroyed Segesta, but on the contrary, increased its port which was then call Al Madarig, "The steps" and supported trade with the settlement of a tunny fish station.

In the Swabian period, following the strengthening of the fortification, the city was named for the first time Castello a Mare (Castle by the sea).
